I love supporting local farmers and going to our local farmers market. I found the produce to be some of the best our there. Right now strawberries are in season. To me nothing is worse than buying strawberries and having them go bad within 1-2 days. I usually buy a few quarts or buckets of fresh strawberries at a time. We go through them so fast in our family. We actually eat strawberries year round. I have tried many different ways to get strawberries to stay fresh and I found a way that works so well.
- Wash your strawberries with water and vinegar and let them soak for 5-10 minutes. This helps to get off all the dirt and other stuff off them that we don’t want on them.
- Drain the strawberries and rinse with water.
- If you want cut off the stems, I do this step. However you can cut them off when you are ready to eat them.
- Separate the strawberries. I do a pile that I will freeze, a pile that are ready to eat right away and pile that you want to last a week.
- Place strawberries in a freezer bag that you want to freeze and place in freezer.
- Place remaining strawberries on paper towels to dry completely.
- Once strawberries have dried, place the strawberries in a mason jar with a lid that you want to last for a week or so and put them in the coldest part of your refrigerator. You can use an airtight container, but I found a mason jar to work the best. These should last a week, if not more.
- Place the strawberries that are ready to eat in an airtight container and place in the refrigerator. I will also put these strawberries in a bowl and leave the counter for everyone to eat.
I hope you find this tip to work well for you.
