The other day, someone said to me, “I can’t believe you homeschool and run a business!” They looked at me like I was crazy. And while some days it can be hard, most days it’s not that bad. As both a mom and a business owner, I understand how challenging it can be to manage the needs of your family, homeschool responsibilities, and business goals—all without losing your sanity. In this blog series, I’m sharing my personal experience and tips for keeping everything in balance, so you can thrive in both your homeschool journey and your career. Even if you’re just considering homeschooling, read on!

Finding a system that works for you and your family.

This is our first full year of homeschooling three kids, and I’ve learned that time management is key when you’re juggling multiple roles. Having a flexible, well-thought-out schedule helps keep our days flowing smoothly. Here are a few strategies I use to balance it all:

Create a Weekly Plan

I start with a rough outline the week before to see what the upcoming week looks like. By Sunday, I finalize our weekly plan, which includes homeschool lessons, business tasks, appointments and household duties. This planning time allows me to prioritize what’s important and gives me a sense of what to expect each day. I’ve found that having this overview helps me stay organized and calm, even when life gets hectic.

Time Blocking: Stay Focused on What Matters

I’ve been time blocking for years, long before I started homeschooling. I used it during my time as a district manager, though it didn’t occur to me then that I was using such a powerful tool! Now, I block out specific times for homeschooling, work and family.

For example, mornings are dedicated to schoolwork with the kids, while the afternoons are reserved for my business tasks. One morning a week, I head to a local coffee shop to focus on work while my kids are in therapy. It’s a great time for me to focus on business without the distractions of home.

I also make it a priority to balance family time with my husband, Jimmy. If he’s closing at work, I’ll use that evening to work, but as soon as he’s home, we make time to connect. Time blocking ensures I can give my full attention to each area of my life, without constantly switching between “mom mode” and “business mode.” This is huge for me. When I get my time to focus on work without distraction I get so much more tone. Giving me time with my family.

Use a Planner or Digital Calendar

I’m a planner at heart, and I wouldn’t survive without one! I use both a paper planner and Google Calendar to stay on top of everything. This calendar is great because it allows Jimmy and me to sync our work and family schedules. Whether you prefer a traditional planner or a digital tool, having a clear visual of your week is essential.

My calendar helps me track deadlines, meetings, homeschool lessons and family activities. It’s a lifesaver and keeps us organized so nothing falls through the cracks.

Balancing homeschooling with running a business is all about finding a system that works for you and your family. For me, creating a weekly plan, time blocking and using a calendar have been game-changers. Every day may not go exactly as planned, but with these strategies, I can keep things running smoothly.

Stay tuned for the next blog in this series, where I’ll talk about the importance of setting boundaries and protecting your time and energy as a busy mom.
