Last week marked the beginning of our homeschool year and my focus was all about creating a balance that would work for our family—especially as we’re still adjusting to Jimmy’s new job. I wanted this week to be a smooth transition for everyone, easing into our new routine without overwhelming ourselves.
Learning the ropes with Mia Academy and figuring out the best courses and schedule for JJ and Lele has been a bit of a challenge, but we’re already making some necessary adjustments. Balancing the needs of each child, running a business and managing all things mom life is no small task. But to my surprise, our established routines made this week a lot easier than I anticipated.
Creating balance with homeschool at the forefront was our priority. As a family, we thrive on routines and structure, so establishing a rhythm that works for all of us is crucial. I’m fully aware that more adjustments will be needed as we settle into our routine—especially when extracurricular activities kick in and when some of their therapies wrap up in the coming months.
Let me be honest with you—meal planning and prepping were lifesavers this week. Having breakfast ready to go made our mornings so much smoother. The kids could grab their meals independently, whether Jimmy and I were working out or getting ready for the day. Snacks and lunches were just as easy, with the kids able to help themselves whenever they needed something. This level of independence allowed me to focus on other tasks without constant interruptions.
One of the things we love most about homeschooling is the opportunity for hands-on learning that prepares our kids for life. Lele is eager to learn how to cook, so she’s taken charge of cooking dinner one night a week. Isabella, our aspiring baker, is responsible for making a snack or breakfast each week—an excellent way to incorporate math and reading lessons. JJ, who dreams of being a builder, helps us with projects around the house, learning valuable skills and reinforcing his math and reading as he goes.
Of course, there were moments when I felt overwhelmed. But during those times, I paused to check my mindset. I know that if my mindset isn’t right, the day can easily spiral out of control. That’s when my 5 Steps to Reclaiming Sanity really came into play. Shifting my mindset and sticking to our routines were key to making this first week of homeschool a success.
