Every weekend I like to do a mini reset to get ready for the week. As a busy mom, weekends often feel like the only time to catch my breath—but they’re also a perfect opportunity to set myself up for success in the coming week and the rest of the year. A well-executed weekend reset reduces my stress, streamlines my days and leaves me feeling more in control of both home and life.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you use the weekend to get organized and prepared for the week ahead.
Step 1: Reflect and Review
Start your weekend reset by taking 15–20 minutes to reflect on the past week. I like to ask myself:
– What went well? Still working on figuring out the best homeschooling for JJ
– What challenges did you face? Homeschool for JJ also my challenge
– Were there any moments of overwhelm or disorganization? Yes, two of my kids tried to rearrange their furniture in their room. This led to a major decluttering for one of them and that’s a whole other story, because we still aren’t done.
This reflection helps me to identify what needs to change in the week ahead and highlights any tasks I may have overlooked. Also it might add things to your schedule like it did to me.
I like to write down these thoughts in a journal or planner, so I have a clear sense of what I want to focus on and accomplish this week.
Step 2: Create a Weekly Plan
After reflecting, create a simple plan for the week:
- Look at Your Calendar – Check appointments, meetings, school activities and any upcoming events.
- Prioritize Tasks – Write down your most important tasks for the week (e.g., deadlines, errands or family commitments). Break them down by day for better time management.
- Meal Plan – I meal plan during the week and then double check my meal plan for the week. My hubby’s schedule can change a lot, like it did this week, which meant our meal plan needed to change a little bit. My busy days require quicker, easier meals like leftovers and crockpot meals.
Step 3: Meal Prep Like a Pro
Meal prepping is one of the easiest ways to save time and reduce stress during the week. Use the weekend to:
– Chop veggies for salads and meals. We always have fresh fruits and veggies on, we eat a lot of them.
– Cook a side like rice, potatoes or pasta that can be used in multiple meals.
– Prepare proteins such as grilling chicken or chicken in a crockpot that can be added to different dishes.
– Make a breakfast or two. We did pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon.
– Get stuff for lunch and pack if necessary, I like to get a few meals packed for Jimmy for work.
Step 4: Declutter Key Spaces
Clutter creates stress, so use the weekend to declutter areas that will make your week feel smoother:
– Entryway– Clear shoes, backpacks, papers, mail and jackets to create a welcoming space when coming home.
– Kitchen – Declutter countertops and organize your pantry so cooking is easier.
– Living Room/Family Room – Tidy up toys, blankets, pillows and books so your home feels more peaceful (we do this nightly too)
Set a 15-minute timer and focus on one area at a time. You don’t have to declutter the whole house—just key areas where you spend the most time during the week. Remember I said one of my kids led me to decluttering her room. Stick with the 15 minutes.
Step 5: Create a Sunday Night Routine
End your weekend reset with a Sunday night routine that helps you wind down and get mentally prepared for the week:
– Review your plan for Monday and the week ahead, making sure you’re ready for any appointments or tasks.
– I also prepare for homeschool, laying out school work when applicable.
– Pack bags for the next day—this includes school bags, work bags or diaper bags.
– Set out breakfast items so the morning rush is easier.
– Go to bed early – A well-rested mom is a more productive one!
Tip: Encourage your kids to participate by packing their own bags or choosing their outfits for the next day. I always layout my workout clothes the night before, so I don’t have to do it in the morning.
The weekend reset is all about using small, intentional steps to create a more organized and less stressful week. By planning ahead, prepping meals and tidying key spaces, you’ll feel ready to tackle whatever the week throws your way—with more time for the things that matter most.
Do you need a checklist to help you out?
