The Christmas season is often described as the most wonderful time of the year—and for good reason. It’s a time of joy, love, laughter and connection with those we hold dear. But let’s be honest: it can also be a season filled with a mix of emotions. For many, Christmas brings happiness and warmth, but it can also bring feelings of overwhelm, sadness or even loneliness.
If you’re feeling the weight of the season, know that you’re not alone.I have had all these feelings and emotions this year. It’s okay to feel a range of emotions. What I learned over and over is that it’s even more important to acknowledge them and bring them to God.
The Overwhelm of the Holidays
With so much to do—from shopping and wrapping gifts to hosting and attending events—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The pressure to make everything “perfect” can weigh heavily on us, especially if we’re juggling family, work or other commitments. My overwhelm this year came from Jimmy working almost the entire month, with very little time as a family. I felt the weight of the world on me. In my devotions I read and was reminded over and over, that God never intended for us to carry all these burdens alone. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus invites us:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Take a moment to breathe, pause and hand over your worries to Him. Let go of the need for perfection and focus on what truly matters—love, connection, and the gift of Jesus. Remember to do this daily definitely helped me through some tough days.
The Happiness of the Season
For many, Christmas brings happiness and cherished memories. The joy of seeing children’s faces light up, the warmth of family gatherings and the beauty of holiday traditions fill our hearts. These moments are glimpses of God’s goodness and a reminder of His blessings. Some of the best memories we had this year were simple things, like making cookies together, handing out cookies to first responders, doing a puzzle, crafts and watching Christmas movies together.
Take time to savor these moments. Thank God for the joy and love He has placed in your life. Celebrate the small things—a kind word, a laugh shared, or the glow of Christmas lights. These moments are gifts from Him. When we think about it, these is always something in our day that can bring a smile to our face and happiness.
The Sadness That Sometimes Comes
For others, Christmas can bring a sense of loss or sadness. Maybe it’s the first holiday without a loved one, a season of strained relationships or feelings of loneliness. These emotions are real and valid. It’s okay to grieve and to feel sadness, even in the midst of celebration.
The beauty of God’s love is that He meets us where we are, in joy and in sorrow. Psalm 34:18 reminds us:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Bring your sadness to God. Talk to Him openly about your feelings. Allow Him to comfort you and bring His peace to your heart. Sit in His presence and be still, it really can make a difference.
Give Everything Over to God
No matter what emotions you’re experiencing this Christmas, remember that you don’t have to navigate them alone. God invites us to bring everything to Him in prayer—our joy, our pain, and our struggles. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Take time to pray. Lay your emotions at His feet. Be real with God and trust that He will guide you through this season, no matter how messy or beautiful it may feel. Because in the end the Christmas Season is about the birth of Jesus and there’s so much joy and peace in that.
Final Thoughts
Christmas is here, and yes it comes with a mixture of emotions. Whether you’re feeling joy, sadness or a bit of both, remember that it’s okay to feel what you’re feeling. We are human, and our emotions are part of our journey. But don’t carry them alone—bring them to God. This is a reminder I need daily.
This season, let’s focus on the true meaning of Christmas—the gift of Jesus, who came to bring us hope, joy, and peace. Lean into His presence, trust in His love and allow Him to fill your heart with what you need most this season.
Merry Christmas,
