How To Reset After A Hard Day

We all go through seasons where it feels like one hard day follows another, and we wonder when things will shift. Even the moms who seem to have it all together have their moments. Whether it’s homeschooling chaos, parenting stress, business overwhelm, or just a rough week filled with deadlines, it’s easy to carry that heaviness into tomorrow.

But I have good news—you don’t have to stay stuck in the hard.

I’ve learned that we can make simple shifts, even in the midst of hard days. Sometimes I reset in the middle of the day; other times, I do it at night before bed. Over time, I’ve found a few go-to habits that help me reset my mindset and reclaim some peace.

Here are the habits I turn to when I need a fresh start:

1. Stop and Breathe

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is pause—like seriously, just stop. Take a deep breath. Step outside for a moment. Go for a walk. Sit in silence. Close your eyes and breathe in God’s presence. One verse I love to say during these moments is:

“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.'” —Psalm 46:10

2. Talk to God Honestly

I don’t sugarcoat my prayers—sometimes I cry, sometimes I whisper. I tell God exactly how I feel: frustrated, tired, overwhelmed. He already knows. And He meets us in our honesty. Talk to Him; He’s listening and ready to help. That moment of stillness often brings clarity. A simple, “God, I need you right now” can be more powerful than the most eloquent prayer.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” —1 Peter 5:7

3. Write It Out

I used to dislike journaling, but now it’s part of my daily rhythm. Writing out my prayers helps me track what God is doing in my heart. On hard days, journaling helps me process my thoughts and emotions. I write down what went wrong, but I also intentionally look for the good. Sometimes a verse or a prayer comes to mind, and I jot that down too. Getting those thoughts out clears mental clutter.

4. Move Your Body

Taking a walk always clears my head. Whether it’s pushing the stroller, letting the kids ride bikes, or walking alone—movement helps. Can’t get outside? Try stretching, turning on music, worshipping God, or even having a dance party in the kitchen. Moving your body can release tension and reset your perspective.

5. 5-Minute Reset Routine

Sometimes a little tidying is the best medicine. I set a timer and tackle one small thing—clear off the kitchen counter, put away laundry, pick up toys, or vacuum. A clean space brings peace. And let’s be honest—when the house feels cluttered, our minds often do too.

6. Reflect on What Went Right

One night after a rough day, I was talking to God before bed, unloading all my frustrations. In that quiet moment, He started bringing all the good parts of the day to mind. Suddenly, the day didn’t feel so bad. Now I make a habit of finding at least one win from the day, no matter how small. Gratitude truly is a game-changer.

7. Speak Life Over Tomorrow

Before bed, I remind myself that tomorrow is a fresh start. I often say, “God’s mercies are new every morning,” or “I’m learning and growing each day.” As moms, we need to remember that just like our kids, we’re learning too. Praying each night and morning sets a foundation for a better day ahead.

Just like I do daily resets in my home, I’ve learned to reset my heart and mind. Resetting isn’t about pretending the hard doesn’t exist—it’s about not staying stuck there. These habits help me shift my mindset, reconnect with God, and move forward with grace.

If you’ve had a hard day (or week), I hope one of these simple resets encourages you. You deserve peace too, mama. 🩷
