Routines That Restore: How Simple Habits Create Time for Mom’s Self-Care

As moms, we’re queens of juggling it all: schedules, meals, school drop-offs, work, homeschool and everything in between. But often, the first thing to fall off the to-do list is something equally important…self-care. How do we do it all? How do we balance the unending demands of motherhood while still taking care of ourselves?

To me the answer lies in routines.

Routines are more than structure, they create freedom. I’ve found routines save me time and allow me to be more intentional, where I can finally breathe, reflect and take care of myself. Here’s how routines can help you embrace and have time for self-care.

The Power of Routines for Busy Moms

Routines keep the day running smoothly and so much more. They set the tone for your home, reduce decision fatigue and free up space in your life. When your day is organized with habits that are consistent, you’re less likely to feel overwhelmed and more likely to make time for yourself.

Here’s how routines work their magic:

  • Morning Routine: Having a morning routine ensures everyone is ready to start the day without chaos. With a morning routine in place, you can start the day with a clear head.
  • Evening Routines: That evening routine helps you wind down and prepare for tomorrow. Spending a few minutes closing down the kitchen and preparing for the next day, will allow for a smoother morning. This routine also creates space for a quiet moment before bed to read, pray or simply reflect.
  • Simplify Decision-Making: Meal planning, Meal prepping, chore charts and bedtime routines take the guesswork out of daily tasks, saving time and energy.
  • Builds Consistency for Kids: When kids know what to expect, they’re more likely to cooperate, leaving you with less stress and more time. This is so important for kids that have ADHD too.

Routines That Make Time for Self-Care

One of the best things about routines is that they naturally create gaps in your day for self-care. Here are a few examples:

  • Morning Me Time: Before the kids wake up, take 20 minutes for yourself. This could be sipping coffee, journaling, working out or spending time in prayer.
  • Scheduled Breaks: Block off small chunks of time during the day for something you enjoy—whether it’s reading, taking a walk or grabbing a cup of coffee.
  • Evening Rituals: After the kids are in bed, establish a wind-down routine that’s just for you. Light a candle, do a skincare routine or read a book.

A Challenge to Start Today

You don’t need a complete overhaul to see results. Start small with this challenge:

  • Pick one routine to establish (e.g., a morning routine, a meal prep system, or a nightly wind-down).
  • Commit to it for one week.
  • Reflect on how it feels to have a little more order and time for yourself.

Final Thoughts

Self-care is not selfish—it’s essential. When you take care of yourself, you show up better for your family. Routines are the bridge that makes it possible, turning chaos into calm and giving you the space to thrive.

Let me help you create those routines and reclaim time for yourself. Whether it’s through my course, coaching or free resources, you don’t have to do it alone. Together, we can create a life that feels balanced and full of joy, one simple routine at a time.
