Christmas is just around the corner, and if you’re feeling like there’s still a lot to do, you’re not alone—I’m right there with you! With Jimmy working all these crazy hours and no end in sight, I’ll admit I’m behind on a few things myself, like Christmas shopping. This is actually hard for me, because I’m usually so on top of things. Jimmy and I haven’t even gone Christmas shopping together yet. Most of the gifts we got the kids, I’ve ordered online.
Sp yes, the final days leading up to Christmas can feel overwhelming, but with a simple checklist, I know we can tackle those last-minute tasks and still enjoy some magic of the season. Here are the final things to check off your list to make sure you’re ready for a peaceful and joyful Christmas.
1. Finalize Your Shopping List
Go through your list one last time to make sure you haven’t forgotten anyone or anything. Check for:
- Any gifts you still need to buy
- Stocking stuffers
- Ingredients for Christmas meals, treats and meals for the week.
Quick Tip: If you’re running out of time, consider gift cards, baked goods or homemade items like hot cocoa jars or cookie mixes. I know we are doing some homemade gifts and gift cards for the kids’ therapists.
2. Wrap the Gifts
I love wrapping Christmas presents, so I thought I would share what I do. I gather all my wrapping supplies—paper, tape, scissors, ribbons—and create a gift-wrapping station.I turn on either a GAC or Hallmark movie. I dedicate a block of time to finish wrapping and labeling gifts so I’m not scrambling on Christmas Eve, when I need to put Santa’s presents out.
Pro Tip: Add a personal touch with handwritten gift tags or a sprig of greenery tied to each present. My personal touch is adding some ribbon and doing some cool things with them.
3. Plan Your Christmas Menu
If you haven’t planned your Christmas menu yet, stop what you’re doing and do it now. Whether you’re hosting dinner or just preparing a few dishes, take time to finalize your Christmas menu.
- Double-check recipes and make sure you have all the ingredients, if not add them to your grocery list.
- Prep what you can ahead of time, like chopping vegetables or baking desserts. I will be making my mac and cheese ahead of time, along with cutting up fruits and veggies.
- Don’t forget breakfast! Overnight casseroles, muffins, or cinnamon rolls are great make-ahead options. We already made some banana muffins and my almond danish already. Breakfast is a bigger deal in our home than the dinner on Christmas.
4. Clean and Tidy Key Areas
You don’t need to deep-clean your entire home, but focus on the key areas where guests will gather:
- Living room (fluff pillows, tidy blankets, and vacuum)
- Guest bathroom (stock with fresh towels and holiday soap)
- Kitchen (clean countertops and make room for meal prep)
Quick Tip: Get the kids involved with quick tidying tasks like picking up toys or wiping down surfaces. My kids love to clean the front and back doors, which is good because they put their hands all over the glass.
5. Prepare for Unexpected Guests or Invitations
Be ready for any surprise visitors or doing a last minute gathering by having a few things on hand:
- Extra snacks or treats, like cookies, crackers and cheese
- Small gifts like candles, homemade baked goods or holiday ornaments
- Plenty of coffee, tea and hot cocoa for easy hospitality
6. Double-Check Holiday Traditions
Take a moment to ensure you’re ready for any special traditions your family celebrates:
- Do you have everything you need for Christmas Eve pajamas, stockings or Santa’s cookies? We have a Santa key we need to put out since we don’t have a chimney.
- Is your Advent calendar up to date?
- Are there Christmas stories or movies you still want to enjoy as a family?
7. Take Time to Slow Down
It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of the season, but don’t forget to pause and enjoy the little moments:
- Watch a Christmas movie as a family.
- Go for a drive to see Christmas lights, this is our favorite. Me and the kids got into pj’s and got in the car. Jimmy made hot cocoa for them and we drove around after seeing a live nativity scene.
- Spend time reflecting on the true meaning of the season.
Reminder: You don’t have to do everything perfectly—focus on what brings you and your family joy. We have really leaned into this, this season.
Final Thoughts
The days leading up to Christmas can feel busy, but a little preparation and a focus on what truly matters can make all the difference. Check off these last-minute tasks, take a deep breath and enjoy the joy of the season.
Wishing you a peaceful and magical Christmas filled with love, laughter, and moments to remember!
