When Christmas Doesn’t Go as Planned: Finding Joy in the True Meaning of Christmas
Christmas often comes with high expectations—the perfectly decorated home, delicious meals, happy kids and plenty of magical moments and creating memories. But what happens when things don’t go as planned? Maybe the tree didn’t turn out as you hoped, the gifts are still unwrapped or sickness, travel or stress is stealing the joy of the season. This year Christmas hasn’t gone as planned due to things out of our control. For someone who is a planner and is all about creating memories and embracing traditions, this year has been tough on our family.
If I’m honest with you, it’s really been tough on me. I’m emotionally and physically drained, trying to make sure everyone gets what they need—like ensuring the kids are getting their time with Jimmy and that Jimmy is taking care of himself.
If this year feels hard, you’re not alone. I found that really digging into the Christmas story has helped me a lot. I’ve taken a step back to reflect on the very first Christmas—the long, difficult journey that Mary and Joseph faced, when I do this I realize my isn’t even close to being that stressful.
Mary and Joseph didn’t have an easy Christmas, if we’re honest. They were forced to travel to Bethlehem, a long and exhausting trip, just as Mary was ready to give birth. When they finally arrived, there was no room for them—no cozy home, no comfortable place to rest. And for most of us, we have that cozy home all decorated for Christmas.
And yet, that night, in the humblest of places, Mary gave birth to Jesus, the Savior of the world and laid Him in a manger. It wasn’t the perfect setting anyone would expect for the King of Kings. It was quiet, rough and so not glamorous. But it was filled with purpose, peace, joy and God’s promise.
Reflection: The story of Mary and Joseph reminds me that even when life feels hard, unexpected, stressful or imperfect, God’s greatest gifts can be found in the most humble moments.
If this Christmas feels less than perfect, take heart in the story of the first Christmas. Mary and Joseph’s journey was far from easy, yet it brought the greatest gift of all—Jesus. In the midst of the chaos, remember that the true meaning of Christmas isn’t found in perfect plans or decorations, but in God’s unwavering promise and love.
Take time to pause, reflect, and lean into His peace, I’ve really had to do this a lot this season. When we shift our focus from the pressure of perfection to the beauty of His purpose, we can find joy even in the hardest seasons. Let this Christmas, however imperfect it may feel, remind you of the humble manger, the greatest story, and the promise of peace that lasts beyond the season.
Merry Christmas,
