Being a mom and an entrepreneur is like trying to juggle 10 things at once while riding a rollercoaster—sometimes exciting, sometimes overwhelming. Add homeschooling to the mix, and it can feel like you’re managing multiple rollercoasters simultaneously. But here’s the truth, perfect balance isn’t the goal. Instead, creating a rhythm that works for you and your family is not only possible, it’s empowering. With a few intentional strategies and routines, I’ve learned to find harmony in the chaos and actually enjoy it.
I’ve been in your shoes—trying to handle the daily demands of family life, keeping up with the business, homeschooling and not forgetting to take care of myself in the process. It’s a challenge, but with a few intentional strategies and routines, I’ve found ways to make it all work.
7 Key Steps I Took to Juggle Mom Life and Entrepreneurship
1. Accept that Perfection Doesn’t Exist, Instead Embrace the Chaos.
Let’s be honest as much as we wish there was such a thing as perfect balance, we know there isn’t. There will be days when your business needs more attention and days when your family needs more of you. I used to always stress about trying to be perfect at both and doing it all. But here’s what I learned, it’s about progress, not perfection. Progress is about small, consistent wins over time rather than having everything perfectly balanced each day. It’s okay to tell your kids that you need to work and you will check in with them.
Instead of trying to manage everything perfectly, I’ve learned to embrace the chaos and focus on progress. Some days are more family-focused, other days are about business goals. Both are important, but neither has to be perfect. It’s about creating a routine that works for YOU and your family. Some days I spend more time on my business because that’s what my schedule allows, and other days, I spend more time with my family. It’s all about finding your rhythm for you and your family. Progress is about small, consistent w
2. Prioritize What Matters Most: Setting Boundaries and Defining Success
When you’re managing multiple roles, it’s crucial to know what truly matters to you and your family. What do you want to prioritize? Whether it’s spending more time with your kids or hitting business milestones, having clarity about your priorities helps guide your actions.
Setting boundaries is also essential. It’s important to have clear distinctions between work time and family time. For example, Sundays are dedicated to family and work time is reserved for when the kids are done school or in bed. Defining what success looks like—both in your business and as a parent—will help keep you grounded. Remember success looks different to everyone.
3. Time Management: Creating Routines That Work for You
This is what I like to call my sweet spot. Time management is key to making this all work. But as a busy mom and entrepreneur, rigid schedules don’t always work. Instead, I’ve found that creating flexible routines that allow for both work and family time helps keep me on track.
For example, mornings are reserved for homeschool, self care and family time, while afternoons are my business hours. Using planners, to-do lists or digital tools like Cozi help me stay organized. But flexibility is important. Life happens and it’s okay if you need to adjust your routine on the fly. Somedays the kids get done homeschool early so it gives me extra time to work and other days I get up super earlier and can get out the door to go get some work done. It’s not about having a rigid schedule but about finding a rhythm that you can adjust based on the day’s needs.
4. Simplify Where You Can: Delegate and Automate
One of the best pieces of advice I can give you is to delegate and automate wherever possible. As much as I want to handle everything myself, I’ve learned that asking for help is okay. Whether it’s outsourcing business tasks, like website maintenance or involving the kids in simple household chores, simplifying your responsibilities frees up time for what really matters. I learned the hard way that I can’t do it and I don’t even try anymore. Just as I’m writing this, I’m asking for help with a new project, after proving I need help (Don’t worry you will see soon).
For instance, I’ve automated parts of my business workflow, like email marketing and social media scheduling. I’ve also asked for help from my husband with meal prep or evening routines. Kids and I have a great system for keeping the house maintained. It’s about finding ways to share the load, so you don’t have to do it all yourself.
5. Be Kind to Yourself
It’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of perfection, but I’ve learned that setting realistic expectations is the key to maintaining balance. I used to feel like I was failing if I didn’t get everything done, but over time, I realized that I can’t do it all in one day—nor should I try to.
As a mom and an entrepreneur, some days my business needs more of my focus, and other days, my family requires my attention. And that’s okay. December was a time when I leaned more into my family, prioritizing them over my work. Now, in January, I’ve found a better balance—some days are more family-focused, while other days, I dive into business tasks.
Flexibility is essential, and so is grace. My to-do list rarely gets done in a day, and that’s something I’ve had to accept. Just the other day, I texted my husband, “My to-do list is long and won’t get done today”—and that’s perfectly fine.
The key is being kind to yourself and adjusting your expectations based on the season you’re in. Some days, business demands your attention, and other days, it’s your family. The trick is finding a rhythm and being gentle with yourself when things don’t go as planned. Flexibility and grace are essential in this balancing act.
6. Incorporating Self-Care Into Your Busy Schedule
Self-care is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. But as a busy mom and business owner, it’s easy to overlook your own needs. I remember when I had my online bakery and didn’t focus on self-care, I hit the wall and was totally burned out. One day I’ll share that whole story and how burned out really affected me for a while. That’s why I’ve made a commitment to include small acts of self-care every day. I get up every morning before my family, I start my spending time with God. Then Jimmy joins me and we spend time together with God. Then I work out. I spend anywhere from 45-60 minutes walking and doing a workout. In the afternoon I like to curl up with a coffee or run and grab a coffee, do a little stretching, sit in silence with God or go for a little walk.
One thing I do is set a timer for my batch work I’m doing. I will get up, walk around in my house and stretch my legs, clear my mind and give my kids hugs. This is a win win for me!!
By prioritizing self-care, I’m better equipped to handle both my family responsibilities and business tasks. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. When I take care of myself, I take better care of my family and business.
7. Celebrate Wins, Big and Small
It’s easy to focus on what’s left to do, but I’ve learned the power of celebrating small wins along the way. I also look for ways that God showed up during the day, whether it’s family, personal or business related. Every achievement, no matter how small, is a step forward. Celebrate those small steps, they turn into big things. Whether it’s completing a project at work or spending a few extra minutes with your kids, take time to celebrate. Go ahead and have that dance party.
Celebrating wins helps you stay motivated and reminds you of the progress you’ve made.
In Conclusion
Balancing mom life and entrepreneurship isn’t about achieving perfection. It’s about finding a rhythm that works for you. Embrace the chaos, set boundaries, simplify where you can and most importantly, remember to take care of yourself. Routines have been a game-changer for me, and I encourage you to start with one simple change that will bring more harmony and routines to your day
You’re doing an incredible job and while it may not always feel like you are, remember it’s about progress and creating a life that works for you and your family. Mama, I’m cheering you on.
